As part of his Mercator Fellowship, Prof. Sotaro Kita visited members of Vicom (the FLESH project and Silva Ladewig) at the Leibniz Institute for General Linguistics (ZAS) in Berlin. During his stay, Prof. Kita delivered an inspiring talk on the “Psychological Foundations of Language”, presenting his latest theoretical and empirical work on visual communication. In addition to his lecture, Prof. Kita explored the laboratories at ZAS and engaged in lively discussions with us. We exchanged ideas on multimodal communication, particularly the FLESH project’s work on effort in multimodality, and discussed promising directions for future collaborations. Prof. Kita also met with colleagues investigating virtual reality and the role of formality in communication, fostering cross-disciplinary dialogue across projects. His visit concluded with a joint dinner, rounding off a stimulating and collegial stay.
