Report on the final annual ViCom meeting, November 2024
From 13 to 15 November, the final annual ViCom meeting of the first phase of our priority programme ViCom took place at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften in Bad Homburg.
On the eve of the meeting, we held a theory workshop for potential applicants in the second phase. In addition, there was a workshop for our PhD students.
The next day the meeting officially commenced. It started with a short introduction by the coordinators, Cornelia Ebert and Markus Steinbach. Afterwards, 10 projects presented an overview of their research during the ViCom project.

The day was concluded with two talks from our current Mercator Fellow Susan Goldin-Meadow titled “From Action to Abstraction: Gesture as a Mechanism of Change and her PhD student Casey Ferrara about “Breaking the rules by bending the form: Iconic modification in ASL and silent gesture.

The second day was marked by a varied programme. It started with 2 more project presentations. After a short break, our ViCom Post Doc Fellow Vinicius Macuch Silva introduced himself and his planned project. This was followed by a large block in which the short-term collaborators had the opportunity to present. 12 collaborations covered a variety of topics, including final or preliminary results, challenges and lessons learned during the collaboration.
Next, the Data Network provided an update on its work over the last year.

This was followed by a review of the past year and an overview of what lies ahead in the final year of phase one, presented by our coordinators. Finally, the projects had the opportunity to meet with each other and individually with DFG Programme Director Helga Weyerts-Schweda to discuss their plans for the second phase or to clarify general questions. After a successful day, all participating projects and contributors gathered for the conference dinner to end the evening in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
The third day consisted of the final 7 project presentations and a farewell with some snacks.

We thank the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften and their staff for their kind support.
