At the annual Children’s University in Frankfurt, Germany, Cornelia Ebert and Markus Steinbach taught a group of curious children about the difference between words, gestures, and signs. What made this Children’s University session so special was that, for the first time, the lecture was simultaneously translated into DGS.
Using small experiments, Cornelia showed the children why gestures are an important part of our language, how, why, when, and what kind of gestures are used, and gave essential information about visual communication.
Markus then took over to teach the children about sign language(s). He showed the children that the sign languages of the world are as diverse as the spoken languages. Using a simple sentence, Markus showed the differences in grammar between German spoken language and German sign language, and that there are also dialect differences. He also demonstrated that sign languages are starting to find their way into popular culture.
