Recently, our ViCom PI Tatjana Scheffler gave an interview to a journalist from dpa-Kindernachrichten (German Press Agency children’s news) about her research on emojis. The article appeared in several German newspapers this week.
In a child-friendly way, the article explains how emojis help us to better understand the sender’s intentions when exchanging messages. But it also notes that despite their use, misunderstandings can occur because different groups may have different conventions for using the same emoji. Nonetheless, as Tatjana Scheffler points out, emojis are opening up new possibilities for digital communication. Finally, the article explains the origins of emojis in Japan.
The article can be read digitally in German here.
