Exploring Visual Communication – ViCom at the Night of Science

At the 6th Göttingen Night of Science, three projects from ViCom presented a joint booth dedicated to visual communication. Visitors of all ages enthusiastically participated in hands-on activities exploring sign languages, gestures, and emojis. At the SignLab Göttingen stand, children and adults practiced the manual alphabet of German Sign Language (DGS), solved sign puzzles, discussed quiz questions on the DGS wheel of fortune and took part in a experiment on nouns and verbs in DGS.

Another highlight were three DGS taster courses given by two deaf DGS lecturers. Visitors could also learn about the forms and functions of gestures, and took part in a pilot experiment exploring whether people associate specific handshapes with certain visual shapes. A further highlight was an interactive experiment investigating whether it is possible to lie using emojis. Throughout the night, we welcomed many curious guests and had engaging conversations about the fascinating world of visual communication.
