Call for Abstracts: ViCom Workshop on “The Linguistic Status of Demonstrations”

We are pleased to announce the ViCom Workshop on “The Linguistic Status of Demonstrations” with invited presenters Susan Goldin-Meadow (University of Chicago) and Philippe Schlenker (CNRS-ENS, Paris/New York University) (tbc) to be held on April 8-10, 2024, at Bold Campus, Königstein/Taunus.

We invite ViCom members, including associates, to submit abstracts for presentation. The abstract submission deadline is February 01, 2024. You will be notified on March 01, 2024.

ViCom Workshop: The linguistic status of demonstrations

Meeting description

The workshop aims to bring together ViCom scholars interested in empirical studies and linguistic theories of demonstration in spoken, written, and sign languages as well as in co-speech gestures and silent gestures. The focus of this workshop will be on recent theoretical and empirical advances in the analysis of multi-modal demonstrations. We invite submissions on the following (and related) topics:

  • At-issueness status of gestural components in sign languages vs. spoken languages
  • Ideophones and prosodic modulations in spoken languages
  • Degree of conventionalisation of gestural demonstrations
  • Degree of iconicity of gestural demonstrations
  • Semantic status of formational or phonological features (hand shape, movement, location) in demonstrations
  • Difference in relevance of formational features for the interpretation of demonstrations (e.g. depictive vs. supportive features)
  • Semantic and pragmatic differences between manual and nonmanual demonstrations
  • Experimental advances in the investigation of demonstrations
  • Theoretical modelling of demonstrations in formal semantics

Abstract submission

We invite submissions of all ViCom members, including associates, for 45 minute (30+15) presentations. Abstract should not be longer than one page (including tables, examples, and references), in 12-point type, single-line spacing and 2,5 cm margins. Abstracts should be submitted to the ViCom coordinator Theresa Stender:

Please note that the number of participants is limited to 20. The costs for accommodation, conference venue and catering will be mostly covered by the central project of ViCom. Travelling costs and a small workshop fee have to be paid by the individual projects.
