Lennart Fritzsche and Sebastian Walter presented their poster on “Nodding ‘yes’ or ‘doch’? On the interpretation of gestural response elements” and received the Best Poster Award at LingCologne 2025 (https://lingcologne.uni-koeln.de/). Their work explored how listeners interpret head gestures in response to negative questions in German. The findings suggest that while head shakes behave much like verbal yes/no responses, head nods can also take on the meaning of ‘doch’—a particle that plays a specialized role in rejecting negative statements in German. The study thus provides new insights into how gestures and verbal responses interact in conversation.
