We are delighted to share that the ViCom project Co-speech gestures and prosody as multimodal markers of information structure (MultIS) is involved in the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network Embodied Multimodal Human Communication and Modelling (EMHACM).

Both MultIS Principal Investigators, Frank Kügler and Pilar Prieto, participate as Principal Investigators in the network. EMHACM brings together 18 research partners and will train 15 doctoral researchers in the study of embodied and multimodal human communication.

The network investigates how speech, gesture, and other non-verbal signals are coordinated in human interaction. It combines theoretical work on gesture and cognitive interaction with the development of multimodal datasets and computational models capable of understanding verbal and non-verbal communication.

This focus closely connects to MultIS, which investigates how prosody and co-speech gesture jointly mark information structure – especially focus – in Catalan and German. Together, the projects contribute to a deeper understanding of how communicative meaning emerges across modalities.
